OSH (short hair) - Javanese / Mandarin/OLH/Angora (medium long hair)

A Balinese is the medium long haired version of the Siamese, the only difference between the two is the longer fur. The same goes for OSH - OLH. But when it comes to a common name for the breeds, trouble starts. In Europe a Balinese is a medium long haired cat in all point colours, tabby and tortie included. While with the CFA (USA) only the traditional colours, lilac-, seal, blue and chocolate-point are regarded as Balinese. Tabbys (Lynx-point), Torties and other masked cats are referred to as Javanese (medium long hair) or Oriental/Colourpoint shorthairs (shorthair) in the USA.

What in Europe is called Javanese, Americans call Oriental Longhair (OLH).

At the very beginning the Oriental longhair OLH was also called Mandarin in the USA. A name that many German clubs adopted also. The GCCF also called these animals Angora, not to be confused with the Turkish Angora.

It seems the most sensible to name them oriental long hairs, as this clearly expresses the difference to the oriental short hair, namely the hair length. It would be desirable to finally have everybody agree to one name only on the national as well as on the international level. OLH continue to be a rare breed, even though Germany nowadays has a few breeders of these gorgeous animals.

Type:		Semi long hair, slim
Head:		Narrowing to a fine muzzle, well proportioned, no pinch, strong chin
Ears:		Rather large, wide at the base, in proportion to the head, pricked
Eyes:		For Balinese brilliant deep blue, for Orientals intensely green, almond shaped, slanting towards the nose, medium sized, not protruding or too low
Mask:		Masked at the coldest body regions, legs, face, tail, ears clearly defined, the mask of a kitten will not yet reach to the ears. All point cats will get darker in time.
Neck:		Long, stretched, graceful
Body:		Svelte, long, elegant, muscular, graceful, shoulders in level to the hips
Coat:		Close-lying, glossy, flowing silky hair, no undercoat, plumed tail and the semi-long hair slightly visible at the neck area
Legs:		Hind legs slightly higher, well balanced to the body
Paws:		Small and oval
Tail:		Long plumed tail, long, proportioned to body length
Siamese - points in		Blue, seal, lilac, chocolate, fawn, cream, cinnamon and red; tabby, tortie
For orientals		Blue, ebony, lavender, havana, fawn, cream, cinnamon, red; tabby, tortie

Faults:		Squinting, kinked tail, points not clearly defined

Character:

Extremely intelligent and affectionate, talkative, active

By the by the thesis that one of these breeds has a different character than the other, as stated in some papers, we cannot confirm in 13 years of breeding.
